چکیده

We present a two phase flow conceptual model, the corresponding simulator (2pMINC) and a workflow for large-scale fractured reservoirs, based on a continuum fracture approach which uses the multiple interacting continua (MINC) method complemented with an improved upscaling technique. The complex transient behavior of the flow processes in fractured porous media is captured by subgridding the coarse blocks in nested volume elements which have effective properties calculated from the detailed representation of the fracture system. In this way, we keep a physically based approach, preserve the accuracy of the model, avoid the common use of empirically derived transfer functions and considerably reduce the complexity of the problem which is reflected in the speedup factors up to 1000. The results are verified by comparison to a discrete fracture model (DFM) for which the fractures and matrix are explicitly accounted for. The simulator is applied to an idealized medium with periodic fracture pattern and to a real, naturally fractured reservoir, mapped on the “wave platforms” along the Bristol Channel. The evaluation shows that the extended MINC model is able to reproduce both, the large-scale permeability and the dynamics of the fracture-matrix mass transfer, correctly.

Application of Homotopy Perturbation Method to Nonlinear Equations Describing Cocurrent and Countercurrent Imbibition in Fractured Porous Media

In oil industry, spontaneous imbibition is an important phenomenon in recovery from fractured reservoirs which can be defined as spontaneous uptake of a wetting fluid into a porous solid. Spontaneous imbibition involves both cocurrent and countercurrent flows. When a matrix block is partially covered by water, oil recovery is dominated by cocurrent imbibition i.e. the production of non wettin...

An Unfitted Method for Two-phase Flow in Fractured Porous Media

We propose an efficient computational method to simulate two-phase flow in fractured porous media. Instead of refining the grid to capture the flow along the faults or fractures, we represent them as immersed interfaces with reduced model for the flow and suitable coupling conditions. We allow for non matching grids between the porous matrix and the fracture to increase the flexibility of the m...

Accuracy Examination of the Multiple Interacting Continua Approximation

This study examines the accuracy of the multiple interacting continua (MINC) model. A regularly shaped rock block with uniform initial conditions and a step change in boundary conditions on the surface is evaluated. The analysis results show that pressures (or temperatures) predicted by MINC approximation may deviate from exact solutions by as much as 10 − 15% at certain points within the block...

Multiscale Time-Splitting Strategy for Multiscale Multiphysics Processes of Two-Phase Flow in Fractured Media

The temporal discretization scheme is one important ingredient of efficient simulator for twophase flow in the fractured porous media. The application of single-scale temporal scheme is restricted by the rapid changes of the pressure and saturation in the fractured system with capillarity. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale time splitting strategy to simulate multi-scale multi-physics proc...

An Analytical Solution for One-dimensional Horizontal Imbibition in a Cocurrent Flow

Cocurrent spontaneous imbibition (COCSI) of an aqueous phase into matrix blocks arising from capillary forces is an important mechanism for petroleum recovery from fractured petroleum reservoirs. In this work, the modeling of countercurrent imbibition is used to develop the appropriate scaling equations. Considering the imbibition process and the water and oil movement respectively as the wet p...
